What is GLOF?
Glacial Lake Outburst Flood(GLOF) is a type of flood which occurs in the large reservoirs full of Glacier. Sometimes the reservoirs(dams) also formed by the moraines. Moraines are known as the debris that left behind the moving glaciers. Water moves from one region to others that sweep dust and some other particles to form the delta. Similarly, the movement glaciers left rocks and soil.
When these reservoirs collapse by the external causes like Earthquake, Volcanic burst inside the ice, glacial movement and Avalanche that leads to Glacial Outburst. Also, another similar outburst is called Jokulhlaup. It’s the outburst happen by the melted glaciers or overflow of glaciers.
The massive flooding in the Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district followed by the glacier outburst may lead to around 150 casualties. There are more than 150 workers involved in the power project. They seem to be affected directly. Response Force DIG Ridhim Aggarwal said, “Representative of this power project told me that they are not able to contact their 150 labours.”
The rescue process delayed because people trapped inside the tunnels and large spaces below the ice. ITBP has rescued 16 people, trapped in the tunnel right now, and at least nine bodies have recovered.
The government alerted other districts includes Pauri, Tehri, Rudraprayag, Haridwar and Dehradun. The entire power project swept by the glaciers. State Government announced four lakhs financial support for the families of those who died in flood. More than 100 people were still missing.
